William J. Van Den Heuvel, 80, a devoted and beloved husband, father, brother, and friend died peacefully at his home in Califon, on Friday, March 14, 2008. Affectionately known as Bill in the US and Wim in Holland, he fought a courageous battle with cancer with dignity and humor. Bill was born in Veghel, The Netherlands on April 24, 1927 into a large family of ten children. He was a graduate of the Royal Academy for Arts and Sciences, in 's-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. After university, he moved to Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles, and started his career with Esso and soon transferred to Exxon Research and Engineering. Most of his assignments were overseas and his family enjoyed the experience of attending foreign schools and living all over Europe and the Caribbean.
Bill always maintained an avid interest in the arts, literature, opera, and classical music. He was an excellent tennis and soccer player and inspired all of his children to take up these sports.
Family was his highest priority and his greatest joy. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carla Jean, his children and their spouses, Mia Richelle Craig of Chatham, NJ; Tanya Owen of Richmond, VA; Nicole Bay of Houston, TX; Jody Anne Sommer of Houston, TX and William Harold Van Den Heuvel of San Diego, CA; his sister Mia Smits-van den Heuvel of Veghel, Holland, his brother Tony of Helmond, Holland, and fifteen adoring grandchildren, a loving daughter-in-law and four sons-in-law.
A Funeral Service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, 31 Woodland Ave., Summit, on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey. 38 Elm St. Morristown, NJ 07960.
