Adelaide Lopes DeAraujo, 93, passed away on December 11, 2021.  A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave. in Short Hills on Monday, December 20th at 11:15am.  Interment will follow at the Church’s mausoleum.  Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family at church at 10:30 prior to the mass.

Born in Newark, the daughter of Manuel and Maria (Roque) Lopes, Adelaide was raised in Portugal and returned to the United States at the age of 21.  She has also lived in Irvington and Linden before settling in Union.  In her early years, Adelaide worked at RCA in Harrison before leaving to raise her family.  She enjoyed walking, cooking, baking and dancing, but most of all she loved taking care of her grandchildren and in prior years, getting together with her 9 siblings for Sunday gatherings.

Adelaide was the beloved wife of 57 years to the late Joaquim.  She was the loving mother of Julia Cino (Vincent), Roy DeAraujo (Suzette), and Marian Stirpe (Joseph).  She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Robert Cino (Jessica), Christopher Cino (Viviana), Matthew DeAraujo (Christie), Rebecca DeAraujo, Grace DeAraujo, Adam Stirpe and Julia Stirpe, great grandchildren, Alina Cino, Mateo Cino, Lucia Cino and Lana DeAraujo and her dear siblings, Isabel Martins, Teresa Ferriera (Americo) and Augusto Lopes (Charlie).

In lieu of flowers, donations in Adelaide’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Vitas Hospice,  220 Hamburg Turnpike, Wayne, NJ.
