With a career spanning 30 years, Alfonso Ramos was an expert in immigration law, providing invaluable services to those seeking to navigate the complexities of immigration procedures. As the head of the Law Office of Alfonso F. Ramos, where he has served clients since 2009, his expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of immigration-related matters, including work visas and representation in removal proceedings. Notably, Mr. Ramos was adept at assisting international musicians and artists through the O-1 visa program, which recognizes individuals with extraordinary abilities by allowing them to work in the United States. Mr. Ramos’s commitment to his profession was deeply personal and rooted in the relationships he built with his clients. He found profound satisfaction in helping individuals achieve their own American dream, such as aiding a long-term resident in obtaining a green card-this stands as a testament to his dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The foundation of Mr. Ramos’s success can be traced back to his academic achievements. His undergraduate studies culminated in a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in 1973, after which he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Rutgers Law School in 1977 (where he was selected to the National Order of Barristers) and a Master of Laws in International Legal Studies from New York University School of Law in 1978. He also served as a Law Clerk to U.S. Senator Clifford P. Case. Throughout the course of his subsequent career, Mr. Ramos has credited his success to the strong work ethic instilled by his family and the example set by his late mother, Angeline Ramos, RN, whose resilience and dedication caring for veterans as Chief Nurse of the Lyons VA Hospital continue to inspire him And his father, a surgeon who was a faculty member of University of Santo Thomas in the Philippines, and was the first filipino to pass the Indiana State medical board in the 1950’s. Beyond his legal career, Mr. Ramos has maintained a vibrant presence in the arts as a musician for The Pens and The Mercantillers in New York since 1998, showcasing his talents on the guitar, banjo, ukulele, trombone, and vocals. Additionally, he has been an artistic director, producer, and partner at Tribeca Lab, a theater company, since 1990 and later served as a director and performer with Collective: Unconscious, an artists’ collective, from 1996 to 2002. He is a member of ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) and SAG/AFTRA (The Screen Actors Guild and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). He wrote original songs, such as the alternative rock opera, “Titanic” with Stefan Zorich, which as performed on the Frying Pan in New York City. He studied acting at HB Studios under Michael Beckett. He also was a fine visual artist who worked in pastels, acrylic paint and watercolors. Likewise dedicated to civic enrichment, Mr. Ramos also served on the board of multiple local theater companies, including Group BR, New York’s only Brazilian theater company, as well as Creative Women New York and The New Circle Theatre Company. Mr. Ramos believed sharing his knowledge through teaching, drawing inspiration from past experiences and the influence of a friend who transitioned from finance to education. He had a passion for imparting wisdom to the next generation and utilized his bilingual skills to make a positive impact on students’ lives within Jesuit or private school settings.
