Barbara Ann Johns

Summit, NJ and Manhattan, NY

On May 13, 2023, Barbara Ann Johns, (nee Jones), 89, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ.

Barbara was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. by her parents, Thomas Olen Jones and Annie Mae Jones; both of whom are deceased.  She was also predeceased by her brother, Thomas Olen Jones Jr.

Barbara is survived by Robert Kenneth Johns, her husband of 68 joyful years of marriage.  She is also survived by her son Robert Kenneth Johns Jr., his wife Carol and their daughter Katherine – all of Baltimore, MD; and son Thomas L. Johns of New York, NY.  Barbara will be sadly missed by her sister in law, Sandra Jones and her two nieces, Dr. Shannon Jones McCall and Dr. Heather Jones Furtado.

Barbara was a proud graduate and philanthropic supporter of Auburn University (BA degree, College of Education ‘55). She was very involved with helping young people continue their education as Auburn “Tigers”, including endowment with her husband of a scholarship for an incoming freshman with a declared major in teacher education.

Early in her career, Barbara was an elementary school teacher in Louisiana and Alabama. She also worked as a model in the fashion industry and as Office Manager for R. K. Johns & Associates in New York City.

While Alabama was always home for Barbara, she loved raising her family, expanding her friendships, and contributing to community and charity activities since the mid-1960s living in both Summit, NJ, and Manhattan.   She was an active member of Canoe Brook Country Club and the New York Athletic Club.

A private family celebration of Barbara’s life was held in Summit, NJ.  She was laid to rest at St. Teresa’s Cemetery.

There will be a Memorial Service to be held in New Jersey at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the Johns family kindly asks that you consider a donation in Barbara’s name to the Summit Emergency Squad.
