Beatrice E. Akwei, 78, of Newark, NJ, passed away on June 30, 2022. A funeral service will be held at Bradley, Haeberle and Barth Funeral Home, 1100 Pine Ave. in Union on Friday, July 15th at 1:00pm. Interment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 10:00am to 1:00pm prior to the service.
Beatrice was born April 4, 1944 in Accra Ghana. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edmund and Christiana (Plange) Otoo. She was affectionately known as “Auntie Bea”. She emigrated to the United States in 1969. She first settled in Akron, OH with her husband, Daniel Akwei. She has lived in Newark since 1977. Auntie Bea earned her nursing degree by attending colleges in both Ghana and the United States. She worked at various healthcare facilities in the Newark area ultimately retiring from the Nursing profession with the County of Essex. Auntie Bea was an avid sports fan and enjoyed reading the Bible. Most of all she loved spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Auntie Bea was the beloved wife of 44 years to the late Daniel A. Akwei. She was the loving mother of Daniel N. Akwei and his wife Johaira, Edmund N.Akwei,, Stacey N. Akwei and Georgina Alibi. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Elsie Gonzales and her husband Juan, Gideon Alibi, Daniel Akwei, Grace Akwei, In addition, she is survived by her dear siblings, Veronica Otoo, Edith Otoo, and Marcus Otoo as well as many loving relatives and friends.
