Carol Ann McGill (nee Olson), 83, of Long Beach Township, NJ, died peacefully December 19th in Chatham.

A lifelong Jersey Girl, born in Passaic, Carol raised her family in Roseland and North Caldwell with her husband Thomas J. McGill, before relocating to Long Beach Island and spending winters in Naples, Florida.

An original Woman in STEM, she graduated as a math major from Immaculata College in 1960 and worked as a computer programmer at Bell Labs before devoting herself to her family. Carol took pride in being self-sufficient and paying attention to details: painting and remodeling rooms, gardening, sewing curtains and dust ruffles, ironing, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and serving as the family’s chief financial officer. A gracious host, she made everyone feel at home, whether entertaining family and friends or business contacts. She traveled extensively with Tom for business and loved playing tennis, paddle, and golf at the Montclair Golf Club.

Known as Mimi to her granddaughters, she doted on them and enjoyed every second together – cuddling them as infants, joyfully attending their school events and milestones, and catching up on the phone as they grew older. Carol remembered everyone’s birthday, thoughtfully sent handwritten cards in her impeccable penmanship, and looked forward to big family dinners on the porch at the shore. Always a thinker, planner, and great listener, Carol rose early at the beach to be the first to get to the Star Ledger to tackle the daily Sudoku and crossword puzzle.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Chester Eric and Mary (Coffey) Olson, and brother Bobby. She is survived by Tom, her loving husband of 60 years; sister Peggy Dickmann of Florida; children Meg McGill of Huntsville, AL, Matt McGill (Corinne) of New Providence, NJ, and Katie (Kevin) Horan of Chatham, NJ; granddaughters Kelly, Brigid, and Moira Horan and Emily (Robert) Jarrett, Shannon, Megan, and Clare McGill; and many nieces and nephews who fondly remember good times together.
