Carolyn (Newbon) Fritschy, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones. She bravely fought a years-long battle with cancer and recently suffered a stroke. She was 80 years old.
Born and raised in Cambria Heights, NY, Carolyn was an only child raised by her parents Carrie and Walter. Carolyn met the love of her life, Robert Fritschy, while working at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They wed in 1965 and were happily married for 56 years. The two settled in Whippany, NJ, where they raised their daughter, Linda.
Carolyn proudly worked for Hanover Township Schools, holding positions in the Board Office and Bee Meadow School before landing at Memorial Junior School, where she served as a secretary for nearly 20 years. She adored working with the teachers, faculty and especially the students. She saw the best in everyone, even the students who spent detention in her office. Referring to them as “her kids,” she often brought them sandwiches to make the time go by faster.
She brought that kind of loving attention and generosity to everyone she met—whether it was by acting as a second mom to many of Linda’s friends, to nurturing her German Shepard dogs or by being a loyal and trusting confidant to many. No matter what, she always put her loved ones first. Carolyn devoted her life to caring for her family, and nothing gave her more joy than looking after her grandchildren in her later years.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Robert Fritschy, daughter Linda Fritschy-Oakes, son-in-law David Oakes, and grandchildren Kaitlyn and Robert Oakes.
