Charles Percy Stanley III passed peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved
ones on November 30, 2017 at the age of 74. He was a life long resident of Essex
County and resided in Short Hills for the last 40 years and spent his summers in
SeaGirt, NJ.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Phyllis Duffy Stanley and their children, his son Charles
Stanley IV and daughters, Laura Grosso, Suzanne Hurlburt, Elizabeth Thimme, Allison
Taylor and Caroline Stanley. He is also survived by five siblings, Thomas Stanley, Jane
Farrell, Jean Sears, Mary Stanley and Terry Tully. He is predeceased by his two sisters,
Joan Stanley and Lori Steinemann.
Charlie was born on October 12, 1943 in Glen Ridge, NJ to the late Charles and Jane
Stanley of Short Hills, NJ. He graduated from Millburn High School and John Carroll
University with a degree in History. He married Phyllis in 1969 and over nine years the
two welcomed six children into their lives and more recently thirteen grandchildren.
Charlie was a Managing Director at Herzog Heine and Geduld and a member of the
New York Stock Exchange for over 30 years. He was actively involved in fund raising
for The Academy of Saint Elizabeth’s in Convent Station and Seton Hall Prep in West
Orange.
His children will remember a truly generous and witty Dad with an incredibly big heart
who loved nothing more than house full of family and friends. His grandchildren will
remember their “Pop” as a fun-loving grandfather who was full of life.
A Mass celebrating his life is scheduled for December 5, 2017 at 11:15 am at St. Rose
of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Short Hills, NJ. A reception following the mass will
be held at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. All are welcome to attend and
celebrate Charlie’s life.
