Consuelo M Loureiro

Consuelo M. Loureiro, 85, of Chatham, NJ, passed peacefully on January 13, 2018. She was born in New York City and has lived in Spain, New York, California, Massachusetts and Ohio before moving to Chatham in 1985. Consuelo received her B.A., cum laude in 1963 from Queens College, her M.A. in Spanish from University of California at Berkeley in 1963, and her Ph. D in Portuguese from City University of New York in 1974. She received several honors and fellowships, Phi Beta Kappa, Spanish and Portuguese Honor Societies, Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship, and a Guest Speaker at National Conference of University Professors, Curitiba, Brazil, in 1976. Consuelo started her career as an Interpreter/Bilingual Secretary for the United States Air Force in Spain, she was an Administrative Assistant for Columbia Broadcasting System in New York City, a Lecturer, Research and Teaching Assistant for Queens College in New York and University of California Berkeley, Instructor at the University of Massachusetts and an Assistant Professor at Miami University in Ohio. Switching careers, she became a cash manager for the Bank of California in San Francisco. Consuelo stopped working to take care of her elderly parents. She has had articles published in journals in Brazil, Portugal, Spain and the United States. She loved animals, traveling, reading and music. Consuelo is pre-deceased by her parents, and her beloved younger brother Raymond, an engineer with the Port Authority, who died in 2017. Services are private.
