David Emery Johnson, 87, of Boyertown, PA, husband of the late Renae (Lorah) Johnson, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023, in Chatham, NJ.
Born in New Berlinville, PA, David was the son of the late Warren W. Johnson and Mary Z. (Emery) Johnson. He graduated from the Boyertown Joint High School in 1954 and was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
David, known to friends as “Dunk,” grew up working in his father’s grocery store, Johnson’s Food Market, in Boyertown. At the beginning of his career, he owned an independent delivery service transporting bread and other baked goods. David then worked as a delivery driver for Longacre’s Modern Dairy. He worked for the US Postal Service for 36 years, primarily as a letter carrier in Boyertown, until his retirement in January 2001.
David was a Past Noble Grand, and member for over 60 years, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Boyertown Lodge #708. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Eagles. David played clarinet and saxophone in several community bands in the 1950’s and 60’s. He enjoyed going to estate auctions, antiquing, and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving is his daughter, Tambria, wife of William O’Shaughnessy of Chatham, NJ and son, Ted Johnson of Quincy, MA; two grandchildren, William O’Shaughnessy of Washington, D.C and Caitria O’Shaughnessy of Chatham, NJ; brothers, Eugene E. Johnson of Elverson, PA, and Daniel E. Johnson of Zieglerville, PA; a large extended family, friends, and neighbors.
Private services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in David’s memory may be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 45 North Reading Ave., Boyertown, PA 19512.
