Dorothy Anna Oravetz

Dorothy Anna Oravetz passed away suddenly on September 25, 2023. She was 96. Born in 1927 in Irvington, she was raised in Irvington and Hillside until moving to Whippany in 1988.

Dorothy had a long career with the Hillside Board of Education serving as the administrative secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. She retired in 1990.

An avid skier, she was a long-time member of the Watchung Amateur Ski Club. She took many camping trips to Lake George with her dearest friends and traveled extensively touring Russia and China along with traveling throughout Europe and the United States.

A generous spirit with her time and always ready for fun, she indulged her nephews, niece and great nieces, taking them on ski trips and outings down the shore. She was also a volunteer at The Special Olympic Games for many years. A devout Catholic, she served as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Whippany.

Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents, Paul and Paulina, her brothers Paul and Robert, her sister Mary (Hopkins) and two nephews Thomas and Michael Hopkins. She is survived by her nephews Paul Hopkins, Tom Oravetz, niece Nancy Miller, grandnieces Rebecca Miller, Laura Miller and 2 great grandnephews Oliver and Owen Moore.

Memorial Mass details will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 90 Whippany Road, on Friday, November 3, 2023 at 10:30 a.m.
Committal:
Immediately following the Mass at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in East Hanover
Memorial Gifts:
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dorothy’s honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Fund or the Special Olympics.
