Dr. Andrew Ulrich Meyer, 96 of Millburn, NJ, passed peacefully on December 6, 2023. Born in Berlin, Germany on April 21, 1927 to Dr. Edmund and Elsbeth Meyer. Andy enjoyed a wonderful childhood in Dahlem, with his older brother Thomas before WWII began. Having survived the war, he immigrated to Chicago in 1949. Andrew served in the US Army during the Korean War before continuing his studies. After earning his PhD in Electrical Engineering at Northwestern University in 1961, he moved to NJ where he took a position at Bell Laboratories in Whippany. Missing academia, he accepted a position at NJ Institute of Technology in Newark, in the EE department from 1965 until his retirement in 2002. Andrew’s research interests involved automatic control theory and its applications, with emphasis on biomedical system dynamics. Since 1972 he was also an adjunct research faculty member of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in the Department of Ophthalmology.
His major publications include the book (co-authored by Jay C. Hsu) “Modern Control Principles and Applications“, McGraw-Hill 1968.
Andrew and Elisabeth (nee Voigts) married in 1964 and moved to Millburn in 1966 where he has been an active member of the Wyoming Presbyterian Church choir ever since.
His greatest passions, other than scientific research and technology, were sailing, skiing, traveling, and the Opera.
Andy always saw the good in everyone and approached life and its challenges with optimism and curiosity.
Andrew is pre-deceased by his brother, Thomas, and grandson Luke. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elisabeth; his two daughters, Lydia (David) Swanson of Santa Barbara, CA. and Dr. Michele C. Meyer of Essex, MA; Lydia’s children Mark and Annika.
