Elizabeth “Betty” Rita Keane passed away on August 10, 2023 at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.  She was 92.

Born in the town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, Ireland, Betty came to the United States in 1948, marrying her husband, Joseph Keane in 1952.  She raised her 9 children in Brooklyn, NY.  She loved spending time with her family.  She lovingly filled their time telling stories of Irish history, childhood memories, World War II, and her early life in New York City, recalling “I can remember when the subway was a nickel!”

Betty loved her music – singing and playing the piano, as well as attending family parties.  She was also a member of Corpus Christi Parish in Chatham Township.

Betty was the beloved wife of the late Joseph Keane and the loving mother of Patricia (James) Dunleavy of Chatham; Eileen (Daniel) Luby of New Providence; Gerard (Dawn) Keane of Denver, CO; Anne (Glenn) Heinzerling of Westfield; Joseph (Meichelle) Keane of Brooklyn Heights, NY; Susan (Robert) Ehler of Chatham; James (Melissa) Keane of Seaford, NY; the late Mary (Peter) Spiess of Manhattan, NY and the late Catherine (Francis) Barra of Belle Harbor, NY.  She is also survived by her 26 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 14 at 10:15 a.m.

immediately following the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY

COAR Children’s Village is the Community of Oscar Amulfo Romero in Zaragoza, El Salvador. Founded in 1980 during El Salvador’s Civil War, it continues its mission to serve vulnerable children and the community. It includes an orphanage, a school, a pharmacy and other services.
