Emilio “Mel” Metta, of Union, NJ, passed away at home on Tuesday, February 14, 2017. He was 86 years old.

Born and raised in Orange, NJ, Mel was a truck driver for Canada Dry for 45 years before retiring in 1996. Mel served in the Korean War from 1951-1957.

His grandchildren were his greatest joy. Mel is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellie (nee Fernicola); his daughters, Monica Metta of Springfield, NJ, and Joanne Metta-Sullivan (Paul) of New Providence, NJ; his grandchildren, Daniel Sullivan of New Providence, NJ, Nicole Sullivan of Brighton, MA, Ryan (Becki) Sullivan of Berkeley Heights, NJ; and great-grandson James Paul Sullivan.

The youngest of four, Mel was predeceased by his brother, Domenic Metta, and his sister, Mary Christiano. He is survived by his brother, Phil Metta (Ann) of Forked River, NJ, as well as many loving nices, nephews, and friends.

A Mass will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 10am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Orange, NJ, where Mel was a parishoner for 86 years. Arrangements are under the direction of Bradley, Haeberle, & Barth Funeral Home in Union, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mel’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
