Erik B. Dabney
11/20/1969 - 08/25/2021

Erik Brandon Dabney passed away peacefully on August 25, 2021 at his home in Elizabeth, N.J. He was 51. Born in Jersey City, N.J., Erik lived there through middle childhood until moving with his parents to Hillside, N.J., and later resided in Elizabeth, N.J.

Erik lived life on his terms, where each moment was adventuresome, full of surprises, and could take an average person’s breath away. For example: In his early teenage years, he performed in BMX bike competitions traversing ramps while executing daring aerial tricks, and winning several events.  Erik enjoyed reading books about American History, trains, and exploring the origin of all types of inventions.  Those who knew him most knew that basketball was his greatest passion. As a player on Hillside High School’s basketball team, he was given the nickname “Whirly Bird” because of his spinning/twirling moves on the court, which occasionally led to a slam dunk! He enhanced that passion and skill level by attending summer basketball camps at Syracuse University and as a player at Jersey City University. He loved every aspect of the game and was often seen “getting his game on” in gyms or courts in the community.  He had a tremendous love for family and an infectious personality that everyone gravitated to. He was truly a free spirit who was compassionate and cared about those less fortunate than him. His kindness and spirit will live on in his family and friends.

Erik is survived by his parents, Bruce and Sandy Dabney. He leaves behind a large and loving family of aunts, uncles, cousins and so many caring friends.
