Ferdinand J. Hoehing

~~Ferdinand J. Hoehing, “Ferd”, 95, of Union, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017. Born in Irvington, Ferd attended elementary school at Seth Boyden in South Orange and Maplewood and went on to graduate from Irvington High School. A veteran in the US Army Air Service Group, he served in WWII. After returning from the war, he roller skated into the heart of Frances Armando and they were married in September of 1946. They lived in Belleville until 1956, when they moved to Union where he has resided for over 60 years.

Ferd worked for over 40 years with Western Electric, beginning as a machine operator, training as a draftsman and quickly advancing to an engineer. He was an avid bowler as well as a member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers and Lucent/Nokia Retirees Organization. He enjoyed spending summer and fall in Northeastern Vermont where he was instrumental in the design and construction of the family seasonal homestead, which was built in 1975. Ferd was avid car enthusiast and also enjoyed leather working, wood working, auto and home repairs and was known for making the best and lightest ravioli’s.

Predeceased by his wife Frances, his daughter Janis, sister Caroline Foster and her husband Raymond and his brother-in-laws; Nevin Steigerwalt, Frank Armando and his wife Joan, Ben Armando and his wife Florence; Ferd is survived by his son Jack Hoehing and his wife Linda of Whippany, and daughter Frances Ciolino and her husband Bob of Florham Park; grandchildren Jonathan Hoehing and his wife Melani, Cristi Carroll and her husband Will, Katelyn Ciolino, Robert Ciolino and Matthew Ciolino; great grandchildren Ethan and Tess Hoehing and Liam and Penelope Carroll and his sister-in-law, Anne Steigerwalt, and her daughters, Judy Cassese and Dawn Regina, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 10am at Bradley, Haeberle & Barth Funeral Home, 1100 Pine Avenue, Union. Internment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park, Union. There will be a visitation on Friday from 6-8pm at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Ferd may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
