Fred E. Widmann – WW II Veteran
FRED E. WIDMANN of Livingston, NJ, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday July 28, 2020. He was 97 years old. His wife, Jeanne, died in January 2017. They had been married for 66 years.
Born in Irvington, NJ, he lived in Hillside, graduated from Hillside H.S. in 1939, and moved to Chatham Twp. in 1970. In 2013, he moved to Care One Assisted Living in Livingston.
After serving in the US Coast Guard during World War II, Fred worked first for Western Electric and then for NJ Bell Telephone for 38 years, retiring in 1984. He was a long-time member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. An avid gardener and bowler, Fred was also active in the amateur radio community, having possessed an Advanced Class license since the early 1940’s. He enjoyed building his own radio equipment and being active for many years in the Chatham RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services). In 2013, Fred donated many of his radios and equipment to The Information Age Learning Center at Camp Evans in Wall, NJ. Fred belonged to the Chatham Seniors Club and was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Chatham.
Fred is survived by 6 children: Wayne (Cheryl) of Jackson, Michigan; Tom of Bradenton, FL; Nancy Duffy of Basking Ridge, NJ; Roy of Garfield, Arkansas, Carolyn Greendonner of Bradenton, FL; and Heidi Smith (Chris) of Summit, NJ; 5 grandchildren: Bonney Fiorito, Katie Widmann, Joshua Smith, Nikki Greendonner, and Abby Smith; and a great-granddaughter Katelyn Fiorito.
He was predeceased by his brother Elmer in 2009.
The viewing will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 10 am to 11 am at the Wm. A. Bradley and Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St. Chatham, NJ, followed by a Graveside Service at 11:30 am at Fair Mount Cemetery, Chatham, NJ.
