Glada M. Beard

Glada M. Beard (nee Moses), 95, departed this earth on May 31, 2017, at Winchester Gardens in Maplewood, N.J.

Born and raised in Jennings, LA., she also lived in Philadelphia, PA., and Schenectady, NY before moving with her husband, Paul, and her two daughters to Summit, NJ in 1956.

Upon graduation from Jennings High School, Glada received her BA degree from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. After a brief stint as an English teacher, she devoted her life to her family, and was well known for her excellent cooking skills. She was very involved with many organizations including The American Association of University Women, College Club, the Summit chapter of The Philanthropic Educational Organization, The Betsey Mulford Crane Chapter of Questors, and the Friday Group of Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit. Glada also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and the delivery of altar flowers to church members.

She was a devoted friend to many, and loved her frequent outings with them, as well as her weekly bridge games, and her lifelong passion for flower arranging. She and Paul also travelled extensively both within the United States and internationally and they proudly shared Paul’s photo slides with family and friends.

Glada is survived by her two loving daughters , Barbara Kelly and her husband George of Montclair, NJ, and Betsy Mues and her husband Chip of Dayton, OH; five grandchildren, Shana (Ted), Christian (Jamie), Jeff (Ashley), Colin, and Susan; 5 great children, Conor, Owen, Hannah, Winston, and Brynn. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, Paul R. Beard, her parents Rosebud and Louis T. Moses, and sister and brother in law Libby and Don Beard.

The family would especially like to express sincere gratitude to Fanny, Margarita, and Damaris, the three most loving sisters who were truly wonderful caregivers and who helped Glada through the last years and days of her life.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial services on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at 11:00 AM, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 31 Woodland Ave. in Summit, NJ. The burial of ashes will be private.
