Hampton P. Abney, 83, formerly of Short Hills, passed away Sunday, June 16th at Juniper Village in Chatham, NJ.


Born in Dallas, Texas, Hampton earned his undergraduate degree at Franklin & Marshall College and a Masters of Education from Pennsylvania State University. He served in the United States Army CIC for 3 years before marrying. He began his teaching career at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania before moving to NJ in 1964. Hampton taught Spanish at Newark Academy in Livingston for 40 years, until he retired in 2004. He helped pioneer special classes for children with learning disabilities in the early 80’s and served as Yearbook Advisor for many years. He will also be fondly remembered for producing numerous musicals and variety shows that became his trademark during his tenure there.


He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Moore Abney and is survived by his sister, Barbara Abney Bolger of Ridgewood, his 4 children, Leslie Abney Ford (John) of Montclair, Todd Abney (Denise) of Succasunna, Mark Abney (Jasmine) of Saint Paul, MN, David Abney of Montclair, and 5 grandchildren.
