Howard C. Thompson, 84, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Overlook Hospital, Summit. Born in Rahway, he lived in Clark and Elizabeth before moving to Springfield in 1954, after marrying Barbara Bergan. In 1958, Howard became a police officer with the Springfield Police department, retiring after 25 years, as a DetectiveSergeant. A veteran of the US Navy, Howard served during WWII. Howard ran the Junior Rifle Club through the Springfield Police Department, to educate young people on gun safety. Through the Union County Police Pistol League, Howard was the county targetshooting champion for 3 years. He was a member of the PBA local 76, and enjoyed building model airplanes. In their younger years, Howard and Barbara belonged to the Piston Pushers Club, where they enjoyed racing hot rods.


Predeceased by his wife Barbara, Howard is survived by his daughter Kimberly A Thompson, her fiancé Joseph DeMolfetto and his daughters Stephanieand Valerie; son Scott A ThompsonSr., his wife Marian Henderson, and their children Scott Jr., David, Mary Elizabeth and Matthew Thompson. Howard will also be missed by his nieces, nephews and their families, his friends, and beloved companiondog Buddy.
