Janet Hazelwood Stevens
Loving Mother, Grandmother & Great-Grandmother
Janet Hazelwood Stevens, age 99, passed away June 21, 2023. She spent the last eight years of her life with the great caring staff at Brandywine Assisted Living in Watchung NJ. Brought up in Cleveland Ohio, she attended Lake Erie College in Painsville Ohio, and then received her MA from Western Reserve University in 1948. She travelled east and taught at Barnard College and at The Chapin School in NYC, married Elbridge S. Stevens, moved to Scarsdale NY, and then to Berkeley Heights NJ. Teaching briefly at The Kent Place School in Summit, she then pursued her musical career as the organist at St. Andrews Church in New Providence and then as the first organist at the newly formed Westminster Presbyterian Church. She remained an active member of Westminster for the rest of her life.
She spent 42 of her summers working at The Aloha Camps in Fairlee Vt., where she taught swimming and lifesaving as the head of the waterfront. Walking up and down the pine covered hillsides for many years, she would go on to hold various staff positions including director at one point. “Ginny” cherished her time at the Aloha camps and touched countless young lives with her caring manner. Her camp friendships endured over the years and she received many letters and greetings from camp alumni on her birthdays. On her last birthday 5/15, she smiled and remarked about every single card that was sent to her.
Janet’s husband Elbridge pre-deceased her in 2003. She is survived by her son Thomas and his wife Diane (Kus), her daughter Betsy Maholchic and her husband Michael, her grandchildren Kalli, Lindsey, Thomas, and Jennifer and three great grandchildren.
Memorial service to be held Thursday, June 29th at 11:00 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 725 Mountain Ave, Berkeley Heights.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, The Aloha Foundation in Fairlee Vt, or to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
