Jeanette J. Meloro passed away at home on July 9th. Born and raised in Newark, Jeanette was predeceased one month by her loving husband, Ralph, of 65 years. Together they built a tight-knit family in Hanover Township and set a marital example for their surviving four children and 10 grandchildren. Jeanette is also survived by her dear younger sister, Denise Devone.
Jeanette, best known as “Jan,” moved with her family to Springfield where she completed her last two years and graduated from Jonathan Dayton HS. She then graduated from St Elizabeth University in 1957, taught in the Morris County school system for 42 years, and made time to earn a master’s degree from Rutgers University in 1979.
A determined educator, receiving teacher of the year accolades, Jan was even more driven to be present for each of her children and then eventually all grandchildren. Birthdays, holidays, graduations, and family time were always memorable, personal occurrences since Jan was the consummate host. Moreover, at every recital, game, play, and concert- Jan was the biggest fan and number one supporter. Although she exuded much energy and natural charisma, Jan made sure the spotlight shined elsewhere, intuitively knowing how to make everyone feel special.
Jan and Ralph traveled around the world, first as newlyweds, then with family, and finally as empty nesters. She truly missed the frenetic schedule shuttling her children to events and, once everyone was grown and relocated, she and Ralph filled the void visiting all family throughout the states, their favorite stop, Hawaii.
When not teaching or traveling, Jan found time for a new adventure in Real Estate. Success soon followed, but it was cultivated under her terms whereby she would find the greatest satisfaction assisting family and friends acquiring a new dwelling. Beyond this, Jan brought her talents to volunteer as a Morris County crisis hotline advisor which always recharged her battery and kept her grounded.
During quiet time, Jan was a veracious reader and particularly enjoyed diving into a novel at the beach or at Lake Hopatcong. She also adored every shade of purple and was a fashionista ahead of her time. However, Jan will best be remembered for her kindness, sense of humor, charisma, and the special way she made everyone feel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the Hanover Township Fire Department at Hanover Township Fire District No. 3, 82 Ridgedale Avue, Cedar Knolls, NJ 07927.
A visitation will be held at Notre Dame of Mount Carmel Church, 75 Ridgedale Avenue, Cedar Knolls, NJ on July 22, 2024, from 9:00am to 10:00am followed by a memorial service at 10:00am.
