John J. Furey, 94, of Normandy Beach, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Friday, March 30, 2018 at Meridian Nursing and Rehab, Brick, NJ.

John was born on January 11, 1924 in Elphin, Roscommon, Ireland. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Margaret (nee Cummings) Furey. John emigrated from Ireland in 1926. He served in the United States Navy during World War II where he received the good conduct medal, European Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon. John was a graduate of West Side High School. Newark, NJ. John worked as the President at DF Tobias, Inc. and Weston Instrument Company, Belleville, NJ. In his spare time, he enjoyed genealogy, history and politics.

John Furey was a memorable person, known for his storytelling, comedic timing and all-around pleasant demeanor. He was always warm and full of knowledge and stories of days gone by. A kind soul, with a keen discerning eye of those who had the same, he was progressive in thought and young in spirit. A talented and accomplished salesman who went on to pursue entrepreneurial endeavor with much success. John was most proud of his family, past and present and relished his Irish roots. From Elphin, Ireland to New Jersey and Florida, John lived a full and vibrant life.

John was predeceased by his 1st wife, Mary Furey and 2nd wife Mariann Furey. He was the loving father of sons; Brian Furey and wife Maria and John Furey and wife Nancy and cherished grandfather of Shannon Furey and husband John Andryszewski, Sean Furey, USN, John Brian Furey and wife Amandine, Mary Fisher and husband Drosten. He was the great-grandfather of Catherine, Elizabeth and Jack and uncle to Paul Furey, Lorraine Lepore and husband Frank, Susan, Lynn and Chris Landow, Christopher Furey, Niels Nielsen and extended family in Georgia and Florida.

A visitation will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Road, Whippany, NJ 07981. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel, 75 Ridgedale Ave., Cedar Knolls, NJ 07927. An interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
