John Henry Holzhauer, 93, of Millburn, NJ passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 14, 2023. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara Holzhauer.
Born on July 8, 1930, in Newark, he was the son of the late John and Ellen (Carey) Holzhauer. John is survived by his dear children, son John C. (Julie), daughters Julie Van Dyken (Edward), and Ellen Holzhauer Gentile (Matthew), and grandchildren Ashley, Colby, Olivia, Connor, and Luke.
John was raised in Newark, NJ where he loved to play sports. A broken leg ended his football career but he continued with baseball and spent a year after high school playing for the Philadelphia Farm teams until he was drafted in 1952. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the military police that guarded a M.A.S.H. unit. Upon returning home, he went to Newark College of Engineering (NCE) then began his career working for Beckton Dickinson, Ivers Lee as a tool designer. He enjoyed playing on the Ivers Lee baseball team. John loved his vacations and each year spent one week at the Jersey shore and one week traveling to locations in the US with his family. Another love of John’s was going to the Millburn pool and hanging out with his friends. You could also see John bicycling around town well into his 80’s. He enjoyed keeping his mind sharp by reading the newspaper every day even at the age of 93!
