John Jack Voorhees
05/16/1925 - 01/14/2012

Voorhees, John G., 86, of New Providence, died peacefully at his home on January 14th.

Born in Irvington, Jack grew up in Maplewood. He served his country in the US Navy during WWII. He was the owner of S.S. Voorhees & Sons, a greenhouse in Union, NJ for over 45 years. He grew beautiful flowering potted plants such as poinsettias, lilies, and mums, to market in NYC and northern NJ. He served as President of the NY Florist club and when the club dissolved, was instrumental in transitioning the association’s assets into horticultural scholarships. He was also a contributing member of the NJ State Florists Association. He and his wife Doris loved to travel, especially with the Society of American Florists (SAF).

Since retiring, Jack, an avid golfer, has enjoyed his membership at Suburban Golf Club in Union, and spending time with his family. Jack, a follower of Jesus Christ, was a member of the New Providence Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir, attended a men’s bible study and served faithfully. He also attended Central Presbyterian in Summit where he also enjoyed singing in the choir.

He is survived by his wife Doris (nee Bendokas) of 60 years; children John, Stephen, Kenneth and Janice; eight wonderful grandchildren; and sisters Susan Fleissner and Louise Haydu.
