John M. Lyna

John M. Lyna, 61, long time native of Springfield, NJ, passed away on December 3, 2023.

A funeral mass will be held at St. James the Apostle Church, 45 S. Springfield Ave. in Springfield on Saturday, December 9th at 10am.  Interment is private.  Visiting hours at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave. in Springfield will be on Friday, December 8th from 4 to 8pm.

Born in Brentwood, NY, the son of William and Mary Ann (Molino) Lyna, John was raised in the Flatbush and Marine Park sections of Brooklyn and graduated from Power Memorial High School in New York City in 1980.  In 1990, he moved to Springfield, NJ, where he ultimately spent the rest of his life as an active participant in the local community.

John was a trading analyst in the municipal bond department at Merrill Lynch in New York City. Previously, he was Owner of Rally Trading, a highly successful coffee, cocoa and sugar commodities trading firm. Rally Trading was the company’s name, an ode to the fact that him and his partners were survivors of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

John coached basketball for St. James CYO for many years, having been a player at Power Memorial and a CYO player in his youth. He also coached his son and daughter’s baseball teams for the Springfield recreation league.  John regularly enjoyed jogging and was a passionate fan of music. Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen and Social Distortion were some of his favorite bands. He also loved spending time watching movies with his family, Denzel Washington and Will Ferrell were his two favorite actors.

John was the loving father of Matthew and Marissa Lyna. One of his proudest accomplishments was creating a better life for his children than he had growing up, raising two successful children.

He is predeceased by his brother William (Bill) Lyna.  He is survived by his siblings, Joanne Antonelli and her husband Peter, Joseph Lyna and his wife Eva, and Margaret Frederick. He is also survived by his former wife, Sandra Lyna, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
