Josephine Hempenstall, (nee Hughes), 79, passed away at her daughter’s home in Union on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
Born in Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland, Josephine immigrated to the United States in 1959 with her future husband. Josephine was a transportation aide for the Union Township Board of Education for 9 years, retiring in 2007. Earlier she was a self-employed caterer. She was a member of the Hillside Elks Lodge #1591 and past President of its Women’s Auxiliary, a parishioner of St. Leo’s Church in Irvington and active in its Rosary Society and Mothers Guild. She loved crossword puzzles, reading and old westerns.
Josephine was pre-deceased by her husband William John Hempenstall. She is survived by her three daughters, Veronica Montagna and her husband Kenneth, Kathleen Schneider and her husband Leonard, Evelyn Kalendek and her husband Kevin, her grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher, Melissa, Kelly, Kaitlyn, Liam, Kevin and Sarah. Josephine was one of 13 brothers and sisters and is survived by 5 siblings all in Ireland.
