Lauretta Corinne Canaris

Lauretta Corinne Canaris
08/05/1924 - 08/13/2021

Lauretta Corinne Canaris, left us for heaven on August 13, 2021.  She was 97. She had recently moved to a garden apartment in Somerset, NJ, from her home of 58 years in Morris Plains, NJ. She was being cared for by Seasons Hospice of St. Peters Hospital, Affirmed Home Care and the daughter she never had, Janina Guzowski, the last 2 months of her long life.  Lauretta was born in Champlain, NY, on August 5, 1924 and was second youngest of 9 children.

Due to a lack of employment, Lauretta’s parents left Champlain for New York City to live on a barge with her 6 surviving children where her father was a Tug boat Captain.  Lauretta did administrative work in NYC for a few years before moving to Boston, Mass, after meeting Arthur, her future husband, who had returned from WW II.  There she gave birth to her sons in 1956 and 1958.  The family then moved to Detroit, Colorado, Virginia, up state NY and settled in their home in Morris Plains, NJ in 1963 where Arthur ran the VA Hospital in East Orange. Her final career lasted 10 years as a food tester for Nabisco in East Hanover.

She was very independent, having lived alone for so many years, and was driving until she was 95.  She cooked soup almost every day, spent time embroidering, was an avid reader, and collected David Winter and Lilliput Lane figurines.  After Arthur passed, she traveled to all the places they never did together, Russia, China, Egypt, Turkey, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Israel and France to name a few.  She went to church at Notre Dame of Mount Carmel in Cedar Knolls and was a member of their senior club.

She is preceded in death by her parents Alfred and Laura Marquand, her sisters Hilda, Rachel, Marietta and her brothers Henry, Orval, Alfred and Oscar. She was married to Arthur Canaris for almost 40 years when he passed in 1983. She is survived by her older sister Beatrice Redington of Lanesboro, Pa and her sons, Brian Canaris, his wife Janina, Paul Canaris, his wife Charlene, grand kids, Daniel, Sheryl, Kurt, Monika and great grandchild Jakub and her nieces, nephews and their families.
