Lawrence William Franz, of Summit, passed away on November 3, 2023, in Hackensack. He was 72.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Lois Trena Davis and Emil William Franz, Larry grew up in La Mirada, CA, received his B.A. in Philosophy from California State University at Fullerton and his M.A. from the Ohio State University in Columbus. After studying Computer Programming and Systems Analysis at UCLA, he spent most of his career developing and writing computer software, and worked as a Software Developer for SIAC, the operational arm of the NY Stock Exchange, for over 20 years. He was a Unitarian Universalist and was a member at the Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Summit.
He was a tireless advocate for democratic principles, a philosopher focused on the study of epistemological perspectivism, author of the blog, https://whereofonecanspeak.com/ , and a passionate fan of Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) since the 1960’s. A beloved son, husband and father, intelligent and big-hearted, Larry was one of those people whose influence in the world served to make it a better place. While his loss may not be widely noticed, it will be widely felt.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; daughter, Betsy of Silver Spring, MD; son, Derek of Summit, NJ; and his sister, Cindy McNally of Laguna Woods, CA.
