Lillian Nelles Kirch passed away peacefully at her home in Short Hills, New Jersey on January 30, 2023 at age 101. Lillian was predeceased by her son Jeffrey and her husband of 70 years Roy. Lillian was born on Staten Island and lived most of her life in Short Hills. She was a graduate of Columbia High School, The Katharine Gibbs School and Kean College. Lillian had a zest for learning, reading, sports, travel, the arts and music. She cherished her many wonderful friends. Lillian was a dedicated volunteer and leader at the Hartshorn Arboretum where she served for many years. She also served in volunteer roles at Overlook Hospital and the Millburn Library.
Upon her graduation from Katharine Gibbs School in the early 1940’s, Lillian took a position as executive assistant to the Manager of The Inn at Buck Hill Falls in Pennsylvania. Lillian believed in the importance of education for her children and herself and she was excited to be admitted to Kean College when she was in her 50’s. She took enormous pride in her academic achievements. Following graduation, Lillian took a position in the Millburn Public School system where she stayed for over a decade. As a member of the Short Hills Club she was an avid tennis and paddle tennis player. She took up golf in her 70’s and enjoyed playing well into her 90’s. Lillian was a strong role model for her children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed. Lillian is survived by her son Roy Kirch, his wife Barbara, and by her daughters Linda Knight and Ellen Kirch along with 3 grandchildren, Guyon and Julia Knight and Jeffrey Kirch. Lillian was cared for during the last 5 years of her life by Annette Osborne who provided loving and dedicated care. Services will be private.
