Marcello V. Conte, 81, of Springfield, NJ passed away on February 4, 2015 surrounded by his wife and children at his home.

Born in Union, NJ, he later moved to Springfield, NJ.

Marcello entered the US Army and worked as a butcher gaining the experience that he would later use in the famous Conte’s Deli. He battled through the Korean War and returned to meet his wife.

Marcello went to Naples Italy to meet Maria who was introduced to him by Marcello’s father, Vincenzo. Marcello and Maria had three children, Vincent, Paola and Pasquale. Marcello worked in the Deli that his father started, Conte’s Delicatessen in Springfield, NJ. Marcello took over the business and ran it for years with his brother Phillip and sister Marie. Marcello operated the snack bar at the Springfield Community Pool for many years. Marcello’s customers from the deli knew of his great skills and this made the snack bar successful. He later opened up Conte’s Gourmet Delicatessen on Chestnut Street in Union, NJ. After a major fire at the deli, he rebuilt and ran the successful business for many years before selling it to go into the formal wear business. Marcello opened Marc Formal Wear, renting tuxedos and suits for many years. He eventually sold his inventory in order to retire. Those that knew Marcello from the deli knew that he had a world famous tuna fish recipe, put together great gift baskets, and had a deli with a lot of variety. His personality was one that everyone liked, and all respected him. He loved making his family and friends laugh by telling them jokes. He was well known throughout Springfield because of Conte’s Deli. His shopping center is still known as “Conte’s” to veterans of the township.
