Margaret Elizabeth Symonds

June 4, 1920 to January 13, 2019

Dr. Margaret E. Symonds passed away peacefully with family by her side on January 13, 2019. She was born on June 4, 1920 in Wood Green, England. Her parents were Archibald and Gwendoline Holness. She attended the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine for Women during World War II. Following graduation and the War she practiced medicine in England and in Nigeria as part of the His Majesty’s Colonial Service until 1953. At that time she moved with her young family to the United States, eventually settling in New Jersey. Shortly after which she began a long career with Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside. By her retirement in 1984 she had risen to the position of Medical Director. After retirement she continued her lifelong work in support of handicapped children as a founding Board Member of the Cheshire Home in Florham Park, NJ.

Predeceased by her husband Edward she is survived by her four children Matthew, Katharine, Hugh and John and five grandchildren. A lifelong animal lover, especially horses, her happiest moments were usually while leading child on a pony.  Her impact was greater than she realized.

A memorial service will be at Grace Church in Madison, NJ at 10:00AM on Monday, January 21.
