Mary Alma Bushong, 100, of Short Hills, New Jersey passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Pine Acres Nursing Home.

Mary Alma was born on August 25, 1913 in Wall Township, NJ. She just celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar and Charlotte (nee Osborn) Parker.

Mary Alma was a graduate of Manasquan High School and New Jersey College, which is now Douglas College. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History and served as class president her senior year. She was president of her Douglas College Alumnae class for 17 years. She was awarded the Vanguard Service Award from Douglas College in 2006 for her service and efforts in parliamentary procedures and bylaw revisions.

She was a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians and a Past President of the Dorothy B. McGlade Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians. Mary Alma was a member of the American Association of University Women and became an honorary life member after 50 years of membership in 2006. She was Past President of Summit College Club, which is a division of AAUW. She was the Past President of the Woman’s Club of Millburn and served as financial secretary of the NJ Federation of Woman’s Clubs. Mary Alma was a former trustee and recording secretary of Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, former Brownie Leader and Corporate member of the Girl Scouts of Greater Essex County, and former recording secretary of the Millburn-Short Hills Community Fund, which is now United Way Millburn-Short Hills. She was a member of the Governor Livingston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of Summit Nature Club.

Mary Alma taught at her alma mater, Manasquan High School, for several years, then worked for NJ Bell Telephone Company for 12 years as a Business Office Supervisor/ Assistant Manager. After her marriage she moved to Short Hills, raised her family, and joined Christ Church in Short Hills.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 41 years, Charles Robert Bushong. She is survived by her son, Charles Robert Bushong, Jr. and wife Joan of Randolph, NJ, and daughter, Charlotte Etta Bushong of Short Hills, NJ,and three granddaughters; Beth Bushong of Columbus, OH, Cathy and Kristine Bushong of Randolph, NJ. She is also survived by her sister, Phyllis Osborn Rankin Olsen of Manasquan NJ.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Christ Church, 66 Highland Ave., Short Hills, NJ 07078. Interment will be private.
