Mary C. Ryan

Mary C. Ryan, 82, of Chatham, NJ, passed peacefully on January 22, 2023. Born in Newark, NJ, she resided in West Orange and Laurelton before moving to Chatham in 1965. Mary skipped two grades, 2nd and 6th grades. Mary attended and graduated from the following schools. Our Lady of Lourdes, West Orange, (K-5), St. Mary’s Academy, Lakewood, (6-8), St. Rose High School, Belmar, (9-12). Mary received a scholarship from Georgian Court College, but chose to attend St. Elizabeth’s College, where she received her BA in English and Elementary Education and her Master’s in Education/ Human Service. Mary enjoyed reading, especially mysteries, doing word and math puzzles, board games and calligraphy. She loved her family, teaching, students, co-workers, and staff, everything Irish, especially writing to her great Uncle Fr. Declan Ryan, Head Abbot at St. Mary’s in Waterford, Ireland. Mary had a quick wit, was kind and had many friends. Her favorite teams were, Notre Dame University, NY Giants, NY Yankees, and NY Rangers. Mary was a parishioner and taught CCD at St. Patrick’s Church, a member of the Legion of Mary, the NEA, SEA, NJEA, Summit Junior League and volunteered at the Thrift Shop in Summit.

Mary is pre-deceased by her parents, Michael John and Helen Francis Ritter Ryan and her sister Jane Ryan. She is survived by her sister Florry Ryan and her cousins, Elizabeth and Rocco Passomato, Mary Helen Browne, John W. Ritter, Jane Frances Ryan and Judy Dyer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 10 am at St. Patrick’s Church, 85 Washington Ave. Chatham, NJ. Interment St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison, NJ. Visiting hours, Thursday, January 26, 2023 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St. Chatham, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name may be made to. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl. Memphis, TN 38105.
