Michael T. Bono, 82, of Union, NJ, passed away on September 6, 2023. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, 767 Prospect St. in Maplewood on Saturday, September 9th a 10am. Interment is private. Visiting hours at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave in Springfield will be held on Friday, September 8th from 3 to 8pm.
Born and raised in Union, the son of Michael and Rose (Spera) Bono, Michael graduated from Union High School in 1959 where he excelled in baseball, football, and wrestling. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bloomfield College and is a member of the Hall of Fame as the baseball team’s catcher. Michael spent his career in finance working for several local banks including Unity Bank in Union as an Executive Vice President. Always active in the community, he was a past member of the Union Board of Education, the Township Committee, and past Executive Director of the Uptown Linden Corp. He was also the former Union Police Commissioner and a former Mayor. In his earlier years he was proprietor of Mr. Pizza and Do Me A Flavor Ice Cream Shop, both in Union.
Michael’s hobbies included fishing, golf, and cooking but most of all he loved time spent with family and friends.
Michael was the beloved husband of 46 years to Lorraine. He was the loving father of Lisa Melisse (the late Dave), the late Michael Bono, Jr., Christopher Bono (Jenna), and the late Dominick Bono. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Jessica Melisse and Erich Beute, his dear sisters, Joan O’Donnell (the late Robert) and Joyce Yard (the late John) as well as many loving relatives and friends.
