Paul Joinnides, 75, of Summit, New Jersey passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021.
Born on October 27, 1945 in Alexandria, Louisiana, Paul was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Mary Elizabeth (Fancher). He grew up in West Islip, NY and graduated from West Islip High School in 1963, where he was active in football and wrestling. But it was lacrosse that truly won his heart. He first picked up a stick in 1958 and was quick to learn and love the game. He would later be inducted into the West Islip High School Hall of Fame. Paul then went on to Rutgers University where he not only graduated with a degree in Computer Science, but was an All-American lacrosse player.
Paul and his wife Pat put down roots in Summit in 1972, where all three of his daughters were born and raised. He could often be spotted at the former Beacon Hill Tavern, Summit Diner, Peppercorn or Zappias, usually enjoying something decadent. If you didn’t bump into him at one of Summit’s local eateries, you would have certainly spotted him on the sidelines of a Summit lacrosse game. It was here where many fell in love with him–as their coach, their fan, or their inspiration. “Shoot for the pipes!” still rings in the ears of many a Hilltopper.
After leaving Honeywell in 1987, he started his own computer-programming business. Housed in the Bassett Building on Springfield Ave, Paul owned and operated Digital Strategies, Inc. until his final days.
In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, cooking, and spending time in Vermont. Paddling out on a lake at sunrise or walking deep into the woods, genuinely made Paul’s heart sing. But it was being with his family that brought him the greatest joy. Paul embodied family, and had the wonderful gift of making everyone in his presence feel like they were part of his. It was impossible to be with him and not be overwhelmed by his love. A handshake or hug from Paul was not forgotten.
Loving husband to Patricia (Gorman), devoted father to his three daughters; Kelly Caffrey (Scott), Jennifer Joinnides (Sean Cooksey) and Cory Connor (Peter); and doting grandfather to his six grandchildren: Morgan, Casey, Mary, Will, Dylan, and Quinn; Paul was also a loyal brother and is survived by his siblings Cathy Broderson, Artie Joinnides and Jimmy Joinnides.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 10:45 am on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 306 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to FLAG of Summit through www.summitforever.org.
