Robert D. Wenz, Sr.

Robert Daniel Wenz, Sr. of Union, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. He was 105 years old.

Robert was born on November 4, 1915 in Elizabeth, NJ. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. and Rose M. (nee Russo) Wenz. He was predeceased by his sister Marie Emily Wenz.

Bob graduated Washington Grammar School and is an alumnus of Union High where he wrestled and played violin in the orchestra.

Married his Bride Elva Marie Bright Wenz (96) of 78 years (died September 2016) Member of Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church, married by the Rev. Frederick Druckenmiller. He lived in Union for 90+ years, Bob and his Father built their home.

Bob, an Incoming Material Inspector worked for Walter Kidde for 43 years. Bob was a Golden Glove Champion in 1944 in the 126 lb. Class at Laurel Gardens in Newark. Also, before retiring the gloves he won all of his 15 professional bouts. Bob AKA “Bear Cat” Caddie at Braeburn Country Club in Florham Park for many years before going to Suburban Golf Course, Union, NJ. An exceptional “greens reader” the Bear Cat played an excellent game of golf. Also, he enjoyed spending time with his wife vacationing in Florida and Cape May, crossword puzzles, the occasional trip to AC, watching boxing and golf on TV, making his famous miniature clothes pin rocking chairs, he also enjoyed his conversations with Tamar “Tammy” Khandolishivi his caregiver. Bob enjoyed family occasions where he would remind you “He started it all.”

He was the loving father of Elva R. Wenz Nugent (Theodore J.), Robert D. Wenz, Jr. and Richard A. Wenz (Judy) and cherished grandfather of Theodore R. Nugent (Donna), Timothy J. Nugent (Laura), Elva-Marie Nugent Hilbert (Craig), Lisa Wenz Knab (Kurt), Robert D. Wenz, III. (Melanie), Susan Wenz (Michael), Bonnie Wenz Bravo (Louis) and great-grandfather of Timothy Nugent, Nicole Nugent, Kristen Nugent, Danielle Nugent, Robert Nugent, Olivia Knab, Taylor Knab, Riley Knab, Louis Bravo and Max Bravo. He was survived by his sister-in-law Betty Jean Stapperfenne.

A graveside service will be held 11:30 am on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Robert’s name to Shriners Hospital for children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
