Robert Earl Millar

Robert Earl Millar, a Chatham, N.J., resident, who was born Sept. 8, 1928 in Michigan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015. He was 87 years old. A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 14, 2015, at the Chatham United Methodist Church in Chatham, N.J. Interment was held at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, N.J. After graduation from Alexis I. DuPont High School in Wilmington, Del., Bob served in the United States Marine Corps. He then graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in chemical engineering. Bob was a member of the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi. Bob had an international career with Exxon, which began in 1952 with Esso at the Baltimore Refinery. Assignments took him, and his family, to Houston, New York, Iran, Libya, Rome, and London, before he retired from Esso Thailand in 1986. After retirement, Bob spent his summers at their home on the Jocko River in Arlee, Mont. Bob was a champion sailor, a naturalist, and a man of many passions. His loves were fishing, birding, beekeeping, reading, stargazing, botany, and spending time with his family. Bob was an avid ham radio operator, a volunteer with the Chatham Emergency Squad, and a member of the Chatham United Methodist Church. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Carol Roberts Millar, and his six devoted children, Leslie (Max), Robin (MaryBeth), Chris (Donna), Paul, Anne (Tom), and Megan (Damon); seven cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He will be missed by his brother, John; his sisters, Gail and Janet, and numerous nieces and nephews.
