Sallie L. Skurla

Sallie L. Skurla, 86 passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 26, 2012. Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, she was the daughter of Harold and Rhea Woodbury. Sallie attended Michigan State University and was accepted by American Airlines as a flight attendant on their DC-3 airplanes flying out of Newark, NJ. It was there she met her future husband Peter Skurla. They were married in 1949, settling in Livingston, NJ. In 1955 the family moved to Whippany where Sallie became a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Church, and was active in the local PTA, Cub Scouts and Brownie troops. She was a long time member of the Hanover Twp. Juvenile Conference Committee where she held the office of secretary. She worked in the business office of her daughter’s dental practice for twenty years before retiring in 2001. Sallie enjoyed golf and tennis, was an accomplished seamstress, and knitter. Her house was filled with many intricate pieces of her needle point.


She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Peter; also her brother Jerald Woodbury of Battle Creek, Michigan.


Survivors include her sons Peter Jr. (Nancy Fico Skurla), Mark (Ashley Davis Skurla), and daughters Dr. Leslie Skurla (Henry Seelbinder), and Jane Arnold (Dr. Timothy Arnold). Affectionately known as Nana, she leaves 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren who will all miss her dearly. Sallie was blessed to have Lily Biney, her caregiver be in her life for the last 2 ½ years.
