Walter “Chub” Jeffrey, Jr.

Walter Jeffrey, Jr., loving husband, father, and grandfather, who was known as “Chub” to friends and family, of Short Hills, New Jersey passed away on November 24, 2014.

Chub was born on January 17, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter and Magdalene (nee Chaffin) Jeffrey.

He was a graduate of Bexley High School, Bexley OH, and Williams College, Williamstown MA, where he was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity. He married Marilyn Hays in 1960 and was happily married for 54 years. He worked for The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company in Sales.

Chub was passionate about youth sports, volunteering much of his time to the Millburn/Short Hills baseball, football, and basketball programs. He was an innovator who developed youth programs that are still in place today. Chub’s involvement in Millburn/Short Hills youth baseball spanned five decades as coach, manager and league president and included several state championship teams. He also coached an adult prison basketball team for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Hays Jeffrey. He is survived by his children; sons, Michael of Springfield, Andy and wife Andrea Luskin of Atherton, CA, and daughter, Shelley Jeffrey Gula and husband Bob of Short Hills. He was the grandfather to eight grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Jill Jeffrey Kingsley of Bexley, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm D. Jeffrey.

A Memorial Gathering will be on Saturday, December 6, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Park Avenue Club, 184 Park Ave., Florham, Park, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to Community Food Bank New Jersey, www.cfbnj.org.
