William J. “Bill” Lopata, 91, of Whippany, New Jersey passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Morristown Medical Center.

William was born on February 8, 1924 in Whippany, New Jersey. He was the son of the late Jacob and Mary (nee Tinus) Lopata.

Bill served in the Army during World War II and was involved in the Normandy Invasion. He was a life time member of the American Legion Post 155 and was an exempt fireman with the Whippany Fire Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carmella A. (Nodoro) Lopata. He was the father of William Jr. and his wife Catherine of Fairfield, CT and Brenda Lopata of Whippany, NJ. He was the “Granddad” of Elise, Olivia and William III. He is also survived by a brother, Jake Lopata and wife Jeanne of FL, sister-in-law, Helen Lopata and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Steven, John, Andy, Joe, Rose, Mary, and Ann.

A visitation will be Sunday, October 18, 2015 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Road, Whippany, NJ 07981. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2015 at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, 9 Parsippany Road, Whippany, NJ 07981 An interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Whippany, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill’s name to the American Legion Post 155, Whippany Fire Department or a charity of choice.
