Bernard “Bernie” Cook, 70, of Union, NJ, passed away on June 1, 2023. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 1212 Kelly St. in Union on Tuesday, June 6th at 10:15am. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth. Visiting hours at Bradley, Haeberle & Barth Funeral Home, 1100 Pine Ave. in Union will be on Monday, June 5th from 4 to 8pm.
Born in Pittston, PA, the son of Edmund and Irene (Ondek) Cook, Bernie was raised in the Roseville section of Newark and graduated from Essex Catholic High School in 1971. He attended Rutgers University and was a member Beta Sigma Rho where he met his future wife, Carin. He moved to Union in 1986. Bernie worked for the U.S. Post Office in Newark for 36 years until his retirement in 2009. Following retirement, he was a crossing guard in Union for another 10 years. Bernie enjoyed gardening and was an avid Jets and Mets fan. He loved visiting his relatives in southern Maryland and his cross-country trip with his brother-in-law. He would often enjoy an ice-cold beer while sitting in his yard. Bernie was also a devoted and loving dog dad.
Bernie was the beloved husband of 43 years to Carin. He was the loving father of Dorothy Cook and Victoria Lewis and her husband Jack. He is also survived by his cherished grandson Jackie Jr. as well as many loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Bernie is predeceased by his brothers Edmund and Joseph, his mother and father-in-law, Paul and Dorothy Casoni, and his brothers-in-law, Fredrick, Joseph and Gregory Casoni. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to the Union Emergency Medical Unit (UEMU), 2493 Vauxhall Rd., Union, NJ 07083.
