Charles J. Stancel, Sr., 86, of Whippany, passed away at his home on June 1, 2022. Born and raised in Newark, the son of Charles John and Stella (Wisniewski) Stancel, Charlie graduated from St. Cecilia High School in Kearny where he was president of his class and captain of the basketball team. Charlie was also salutorian of the class, second only to Theresa Dickson, the valedictorian, who would become his future wife. He attended night school at Seton Hall University and earned a bachelors degree in accounting while raising a family. Charlie was an executive in the banking industry for many years culminating as President of the Powder Mill Bank in Morris Plains. He was a member of the Morris County Chamber of Commerce, the Morris County Jaycees, and the Hanover Sewerage Authority. Charlie loved playing basketball. He played for the Newark Iron Dukes for years and continued playing basketball at the YMCA until the age of 70. He is fondly remembered as a loving husband, an amazing father and father in law, and a wonderful grandfather. He was a loyal friend, a firm believer in Jesus Christ and will be terribly missed by all who knew him.
Charlie was the beloved husband of 65 years to Theresa. He was the loving father on the late Ann Stancel, Theresa Gadsby (Michael), Charles Stancel, Jr. and Victoria Davey (Gregory). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Michael Gadsby, Kyle Davey, Connor Davey and Nicole Davey.
