Elizabeth (Betty) Newell (nee Howes), 95, peacefully passed away October 10, 2022 at her residence in Scottsdale Arizona. Betty was born July 27, 1927 in Orange New Jersey to Arthur Reginald Howes and Elma Marcia Howes nee Woodcock. Betty grew up in Bloomfield NJ with her parents and younger sister Barbara. She graduated from Bloomfield High School and attended the Spanish American Institute in New York City. She worked for a few years at several firms including McGraw Hill Publishers before marrying Harry Edmund Newell, also from Bloomfield on December 6, 1952. The couple moved to New Providence NJ in 1953 and spent their entire married life at 18 Homes Oval where they had 2 children; Ellen Rogers (Richard) and Stuart (deceased).
Betty volunteered for many years with the TWIG Overlook Hospital Auxiliary and then for 46 years with the New Providence Historical Society. She was a very active member with the society and made many good friends while working at the Old House and in the Mason Room. Betty also enjoyed working on her family tree, amassing a very large frog collection and traveling all over the world with her husband. She spent the last 10 years in Arizona after her husband died in 2012 to be near her daughter and son in law. She enjoyed seeing the state with them and going to concerts with her daughter. She also enjoyed spending the holidays and visits with Richard’s children and grandchildren. Betty loved the heat and did not miss the winters at all! Betty is survived by Ellen and Richard, her sister’s children Karen King, Mark and Michelle Pedersen and Thomas Pedersen and great nephew Jeru King and his family.
