George C. Pittenger, 83, of Springfield, NJ, passed away on April 3, 2024, surrounded with love by his family. A funeral mass will be held at St. James the Apostle Church, 45 S. Springfield Ave. in Springfield on Tuesday, April 9th at 10:00am. Interment is private. Visiting hours at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave., also in Springfield, will be on Monday from 4 to 8pm.
Born in Irvington, the son of Clarence and Adeline (Grover) Pittenger, George was raised in Millburn and graduated from Millburn High School in 1958. In 1961, he married and moved with his lifetime sweetheart and love of his life Carolin. George worked for the United States Post Office for 41 years until his retirement in 2000. A longtime active parishioner at St. James the Apostle Church, he served as an usher for 50 years. George enjoyed boating, fishing and travel and was an avid Yankees and NY Giants fan.
George was the beloved husband of 63 years to Carolin. He was the loving father of George Pittenger, Jr. and his wife Kathie, Theresa Buthmann and her late husband Ronald), and Cheryl Nadel and her husband David. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Keri Sinoy and her husband Reno, Christopher Buthmann and his wife Bridgett, Emily Boland and her husband Nick, George Pittenger, III, and Gabrielle Nadel, as well as his two great grandchildren, Olivia and Luke. George also leaves behind his siblings, Edgar Pittenger (Carol Lou) and James Pittenger (Diane). He is predeceased by his sister Judith Williams (Dan).
In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory can be made to St. James the Apostle Church.
