Malcolm Bobb Burton passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024 in Manahawkin, NJ.
Malcolm was born on December 22, 1937, to Mary Elizabeth Bobb Burton and Malcolm V. Burton in Naperville, Illinois, He was raised in Bethesda, MD and was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church. He attended St. Alban’s School for Boys in Washington, DC where he was a choirboy for the National Cathedral, played football, soccer and played trumpet. He graduated in 1956.
After meeting Ray Benner at Scientist Cliffs, MD in 1953, at ages 13 and 15, Ray and Malcolm were married in Bethesda in 1958. They settled in Chatham, NJ for 40 years, Manahawkin, NJ for the past 21 years and have had homes on St. George Island, FL, Jekyll Island, GA and Harvey Cedars, NJ. He and Ray enjoyed spending time in Barbados for over 40 years.
Malcolm attended Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA for undergraduate and Law School and earned a BA in History, Bachelor of Law and JD in 1960 and 1963 respectively. He wrote for the Law Review and was chosen All South left fullback for soccer.
Malcolm enjoyed a 40-year career with Chubb and Son Inc. as a Managing Director and upon retirement at age 65, spent 12 years as an Arbitrator. He was a member of the US Supreme Court Bar, NJ Supreme CT, NJ District CT Bar, VA Supreme CT of Appeals and the MD CT of Appeals.
Faith was very important to Malcolm. He was a member of the Chatham Township Presbyterian Church, NJ where he was an Elder, taught Sunday School, sang tenor in the Choir and was a member of the Presbyterian Church his entire adult life.
He is survived by his loving wife Ray, of 66 years, and 5 children. Barbara Ray Burton Heimrich (Peter), Susan Elizabeth Burton Fletcher (Michael), James Vreeland Burton (Valerie), Malcolm Christopher Burton (Linda) and Matthew Thomas Burton. He leaves behind 14 Grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He is survived by his brother, Charles Pierce Burton (Barbara), 3 nieces, 2 great nephews and 3 great nieces.
