08/30/1944 - 03/03/2024

Marian Hobbie, 79, of Chatham NJ passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on March 3, 2024 after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma.  Memorial visiting hours at Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St. in Chatham will be held on Sunday, March 10th from 2 to 5pm.  A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick Church, 85 Washington Ave. in Chatham on Monday, March 11th at 10:30am.  Interment is private.

Born in New York City, the daughter of Adam and Anna (Rastocny) Gaydos, Marian moved to Chatham when she was 9 years old.  She attended St. Patrick’s for elementary and middle school and graduated from Chatham High School in 1962.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson, two Master’s Degrees from Kean University and her PhD from Catholic University in Washington, DC. Marian was a teacher at St. Patrick School for many years before becoming principal at St. Joseph’s School in West Orange. After 7 years, she returned to St. Pat’s serving as principal for the next 14. After Saint Pat’s she became the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Center. She continued working as an adjunct professor at Fordham University in addition to multiple online doctorate mentorship programs up until her diagnosis.

During her free time, Marian enjoyed getting outside and going on vacations with her family. When her girls were little, she and her husband Bill would take a trip to Maine every year. There they vacationed along Green Lake in Ellsworth Falls and enjoyed swimming and boating. Here, Marian nurtured her love of the outdoors and honed her photography skills taking pictures of the famed sunsets at Sunset Lodge. In her later years she and Bill would spend many long weekends in the cabin they built together in Northeast Pennsylvania. Here they were able to get away and share alone time together. Marian loved reading and spending much of her time on the deck looking over the lake. She continued her photography taking beautiful pictures of sunrises and sunsets displaying them on a wall in her home for her family to appreciate.

Catholic Education was always on the forefront of Marian’s mind. It was what she would say, “she was called to do.” During her years at St. Joe’s and St. Pat’s she touched the lives of many others, not just her family. Her caring demeanor and dedication shined through her work as she always wanted what was best for her schools and more importantly the students and faculty within them. After family, teaching and mentoring were the most important facets of her life and she truly changed the lives of many with her work.

Marian was the beloved wife of 58 years to William “Bill” Hobbie.  She was the loving mother of Linda Ann Hobbie (Heshey Uszerowicz), Sharon Ann Reeve (Thomas Korkuch), and Christine Ann Angelica (Michael).  She is also survived by her cherished and adored grandsons, Matt and Andrew Sisk, Billy Reeve, Jack Angelica, and Harry Reeve, her dear sisters, Juliann Gaydos Muller (the late Robert) and Joann Gaydos Morgan (Kirk), her endeared nieces and nephews Tim (Aubrey), Jesse, and Kitty Morgan, and her precious grandnephew Flint Morgan.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Marian’s memory may be made to St. Patrick School, 45 Chatham St., Chatham, NJ 07928
