Martha Jane (Thoman) Hellriegel, 86, of Chatham Township, NJ, passed away on February 29, 2024. She was born in 1937 to parents Carolyn Matthews Thoman and James Thoman in Flushing, NY. She attended Flushing High School and went on to study at Queens College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature.
Martha and William Hellriegel were married in 1965. They lived in Port Washington, NY during which time sons Peter and John were born. They moved to Chatham Township in 1972 where they resided for over 50 years. Martha was a valued member of the Township’s Planning Committee and Zoning Board for many years. She also volunteered with the League of Women Voters as well as Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), whose mission is to help women around the world advance through education. She and Bill regularly attended the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township and were interested in their respective families’ genealogies and enjoyed researching their family trees.
Martha is survived by her husband Bill, sons Peter and John, daughter-in-law Nancy, and grandsons, Bruce and Daniel. She was preceded in death by beloved sister Alice.
